Background of the Study
Prolonged drought conditions can have devastating effects on public health, particularly in regions already vulnerable to environmental and socio-economic challenges. In Borno State, extended periods of drought lead to water scarcity, food insecurity, and malnutrition, which in turn contribute to a range of health issues. The lack of adequate water supply compromises hygiene and sanitation, leading to an increased risk of waterborne diseases, while nutritional deficiencies weaken the immune system, making populations more susceptible to infections (Musa, 2023; Abdullahi, 2024). Drought also exacerbates stress and mental health problems among affected communities. Although various governmental and non-governmental initiatives aim to mitigate the effects of drought, the direct health implications remain insufficiently documented. This study will explore the multifaceted health impacts of prolonged drought in Borno State by analyzing epidemiological data, conducting community surveys, and evaluating the effectiveness of existing drought mitigation strategies.
Statement of the Problem
Borno State is currently experiencing prolonged drought conditions that have led to significant public health challenges. Water scarcity, reduced agricultural productivity, and subsequent food insecurity have resulted in high rates of malnutrition, dehydration, and waterborne diseases. In addition, the stress associated with prolonged drought contributes to mental health issues among the affected populations. Despite interventions aimed at water conservation and food aid, many communities continue to suffer from the adverse health effects of drought. The lack of comprehensive data on the health implications of prolonged drought hampers efforts to design effective public health responses and disaster management strategies. This study seeks to fill the gap by systematically investigating how prolonged drought impacts physical and mental health in Borno State, with the goal of informing better resource allocation and emergency response planning.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the health outcomes associated with prolonged drought conditions in Borno State.
2. To identify the key factors that exacerbate health risks during drought.
3. To recommend public health interventions and drought mitigation strategies to alleviate these impacts.
Research Questions
1. What are the primary health implications of prolonged drought in Borno State?
2. Which populations are most vulnerable to drought-related health issues?
3. What interventions can effectively reduce the health impacts of drought?
Research Hypotheses
1. Prolonged drought is significantly associated with increased incidence of waterborne diseases and malnutrition.
2. Vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly, are disproportionately affected by drought-related health issues.
3. Integrated drought mitigation and public health interventions will reduce adverse health outcomes.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will target drought-affected communities in Borno State, using health records, household surveys, and focus group discussions. Limitations include potential variability in drought severity across regions and challenges in isolating drought effects from other factors.
Definitions of Terms
• Prolonged Drought: Extended periods of below-average rainfall leading to water scarcity.
• Waterborne Diseases: Illnesses caused by pathogenic microorganisms transmitted through contaminated water.
